Cattle Trails Original map designs incorporating
the great cattle trails, frontier forts, roads and the railroads of the time.

1876~Great Texas & Southwestern Cattle Trails, Stages,
Frontier Forts & Railroads
This Great Texas
Trails map is a parchment toned reproduction of the superb 1876 original - S.
A. Mitchell County Map of Texas. It is thought to be one of the best Texas and
Southwestern maps ever published for the period after the Civil War through the
end of the 19th century. Upon it, overlaid, in color, are the documented routes
of the major Texas and Southwestern northbound cattle trails including the Chisholm/Eastern
Trail, the Western Trail, the Goodnight-Loving Trail and the Shawnee Trail, as
well as the later route of the Butterfield Overland Stage Lines.
In addition, the locations of the major Frontier and Indian Territory military
forts are detailed, including some very early private forts. This highly detailed
post Civil War map also shows some historic locations like Jesse Chisholm's Ranch,
the Chisholm Store in Indian Territory, the famous Red River Crossing on the Chisholm
Trail in Montague County, Doan's Crossing of the Red River in Wilbarger County
on the Western Trail and Horsehead Crossing on the Goodnight-Loving Trail and
Butterfield Stage route. In Texas and the Southwest, the period
after the Civil War from about 1865 to the middle 1890's was turbulent with reconstruction,
the final Indian Wars, the development of long distance transportation including
the telegraph, stage lines and railroads. The cattle drives rebuilt a staggering
Texas economy and opened up a new food source to all of the United States. An
exclusive copyrighted design featuring a stunning 1876 S.A Mitchell map of Texas,
Indian Territory and New Mexico overlaid with the established routes of the Chisholm,
Great Eastern, Great Western or Dodge City, Goodnight-Loving & Shawnee cattle
trails, the Butterfield Overland Stage Line, the very few early Texas railroads,
and the locations of most the Frontier Forts plus other detail.

Lonesome Dove ~ Comanche Moon Wars ~ Great Trails Map Original
map designs incorporating the great cattle trails, frontier forts, roads and
the railroads of the time.
The
Lonesome Dove saga has entered American folklore. Larry McMurtrys 1986 novel,
the TV miniseries of 1989 and the prequels & sequels have captured the imagination
of millions. But until our Lonesome Dove map was published there was no way for
the reader to follow and understand the topography and geography of this long
epic Texas to Montana trek. While the
novel is, of course, fiction and some of the locations like the village of Lonesome
Dove on the Rio Grande are also fictional, McMurtry who is a superb western historian,
did not take too many liberties with the layout of the rough and challenging terrain
or with the character of the inhabitants of an area that after the Civil War was
slowly turning from open range and lawlessness to what was then called civilization.
The Lonesome Dove ~ Comanche Moon map is an original copyrighted
design based on an 1881 US map by S.A. Mitchell. This map also has most of the
Texas locations and place names from McMurtys equally great Comanche Moon
novel which is the preface to Lonesome Dove. It follows Gus & Call during
their Texas Ranger days before the Civil War. Comanche Moon is now a mini-series
for television. The Chisholm, Great Western,
Goodnight-Loving, Shawnee and the other major overland cattle trails are also
overlaid in their correct positions. This
is a very powerful and informative original map. All the maps are on standard
size heavy weight parchment stock paper, making them easily matted and framed.

1860 ~
Pre-Civil War ~ Texas County Map by S.A. Mitchell
This
Texas map is a reproduction of the superb 1860 S. A. Mitchell County Map of Texas
from an original collection. It is thought to be one of the best Texas and Southwestern
maps ever published for the period just prior to the Civil War . In this period
Texas was in rapid development, trying to get railroad lines to the major cities
and shipping points. The slavery issue and secession was in the background but
getting new settlers into the states and creating an economy were on the minds
of most. The large cattle drives to the north had not started at this point.
Here is more detail from the superb Handbook of Texas Online: This map features
an intricate and beautiful border that was typical of Mitchell County Maps to
this point. The hand applied colors on the original in our collection, from which
this reproduction was made, are subtle but effective and avoid the checkerboard
look of so many other Texas maps of this period. Note that this map will
have large margins at right & left on the 18" x 24" sheet. The sheet
size is just right for easy readability of the great amount of detail included.
It is extremely decorative when placed on a wall. The map is printed on excellent
heavy acid free linen finish stock that will resist handling smudges. 1860

1872 Texas
County Map by Warner & Beers
Fabulous
1872 Texas & Indian Territory County Map of Texas by Warner & Beers Note:
This map is almost square so there are large top and bottom margins on the 36"
x 24" sheet. Lost County! This is one of the few Texas maps that shows Wigefarth
County in the lower Panhandle next to Indian Territory. This Texas county was
in existence for only a short time. I have never seen it on any other major Texas
County Map. All The Early Post Civil War Frontier Forts, Trails & Places
in Texas & Indian Territory Warner & Beers maps are known for their great
beauty and their accuracy. The national Atlas of the United States that this map
was published for was copyrighted in 1872 and this edition was published in 1876.
In this transitional period, the railroads had only reached as far west as Dallas
& Austin. There are a number of projected but never built fantasy railroads
also shown. In addition this map has very good detail as to the existing roads
and trails. Shown are the major Indian war trails, the military roads still connecting
all the frontier forts and many now-forgotten place names.. This is one
of the few major post-Civil War maps that shows the entire state of Texas without
chopping off either the Panhandle or the western sections which adds greatly to
the visual appeal. In addition, a very large part of Indian Territory and New
Mexico is shown in full color and detail. The map features and intricate border
coupled with effective but subtle hand wash coloring. This is in direct contrast
to the crude & garish "checkerboard" look of many of its contemporaries.
Along with some of the contemporary S.A. Mitchell maps, his may be one of the
most beautiful maps of Texas , and possibly one of the best looking Texas maps
ever published 1872 Texas County

1876 Texas County
Map by S.A. Mitchell
In
1876 when this superb folio map of Texas was published by the S.A. Mitchell Co.,
the frontier was still in flux, and the western counties including those on the
barren and little known Llano Estacado had not yet been formed from the early
territories. This oversize limited edition reproduction brings out many normally
hard to see features. In this transitional period, the railroads had only reached
as far west as Fort Worth & San Antonio. Shown are the major Indian war trails,
the military roads still connecting all the frontier forts and many now-forgotten
place names. This is one of the few major post-Civil War maps that shows
the entire state of Texas without chopping off either the Panhandle or the western
sections which adds greatly to the visual appeal. In addition, a very large part
of Indian Territory and New Mexico is shown in full color and detail. The map
features the trademark grapevine border coupled with effective but subtle hand
wash coloring. This is in direct contrast to the crude & garish "checkerboard"
look of many of its contemporaries. This may be one of the most beautiful
of the many Mitchell maps of Texas , and possibly one of the best looking Texas
maps ever published. The sample picture shown is at very low Internet resolution
and reduced in size. It does not even begin to show the detail and quality of
the actual map. All Antique Maps of Texas
reproductions are scanned at 300+ dpi and offer fantastic resolution and detail
even in reduced sized prints. 1876
